Presentation and critical text “BORDER passage and possibility” by Patrizia Cauteruccio

There is an area suspended between an “inside” and an “outside”.

An area that has the pragmatic intent of signaling belonging and exclusion from a space designed or imagined; an area that creates infinite conceptual oppositions: internal and external, near and far, order and disorder, real and unreal.

This area is called the frontier and manifests itself in its dualistic nature as a separating device and at the same time as a communication tool, capable of relating apparently opposite elements. The frontier, which still belongs to the natural process of self-definition, in fact implies awareness of one’s own dimension but also of something different, “other”. It becomes like this a hinge between two realities, which draws food from these, feeds on them until its main feature is permeability.

A stormy or peaceful dialogue is therefore established between the internal and external realities, favoring a mixture of elements. It is no coincidence that Zygmunt Bauman defines the frontiers of creative workshops on the art of living together. It is these considerations that explain the adoption of the word frontier rather than border although in current usage the two terms are often used interchangeably.

The border is a net, safe, stable limit between two realities and has a mainly geographical connotation. The border has a broader and more evocative meaning: not a line but an area. The frontier is unstable, elusive, destined to change rapidly and become contaminated. It presupposes a relationship between inside and outside, just as it presupposes a point of view from the inside to the outside, a gaze that goes beyond the boundary to see what is beyond it.

It is a glance towards an indefinite space that generates two opposite feelings, fear and at the same time the desire to venture into a little-known territory, the territory of possibility. It is easy to understand how the frontier is therefore fertile ground for artists. who can immerse themselves in this world of mingling and curiosity, leaving a lot of space for creative imagination.

Just the artist, by his tireless nature visual narrator and interpreter of concrete experiences, has investigated the proposed theme according to his own sensitivity by providing a great variety of interpretations of the concept of frontier.
